About David

I live in Swanage, Dorset in the south of England and I am a self taught painter. I originally worked in oils and pastels as a portrait and figure artist but gave up painting to concentrate on other business commitments.

A few years ago I was encouraged by my son, who is a professional photographer, to learn how to use Photoshop and revisit my passion for art.

At first I used it for photography and photo manipulation, but soon discovered Photoshop’s ability to be used as a canvas for my own imagination.

I have now started to concentrate more and more on my art from my studio in Dorset, and have set up my own business, Cauldron Images, and continue to produce my visualisations of a world similar to our own, albeit populated by stranger beings.

Please take time to explore and enjoy my pictures in the galleries and if you would like to make any comments about my work, or enquire about purchasing or commissioning work, then please use the details on the contacts section to get in touch.

David’s Art

Most of my paintings start life as an idea in my head, from which I then sketch it with pencil and paper, I find it useful to keep a pad and pencil with me at all times as inspiration can come to you at the strangest of moments.

Back in my studio these sketches are refined and then scanned onto my computer.

Using Photoshop, the sketch is selected with the magic wand and dragged onto a new canvas and given a name.

The image is now ready to start life as a new project.

The sketch is refined further using the pencil and smudge tools as well as the eraser.

Another layer is then added behind the figures and colour is blocked in, these two layered are then merged and I can start to build texture and shadow. I always use photographs for reference, I find this helps with accuracy of the finished work.
